Comenzando un nuevo ejército / Starting a new army

Rebuscando entre las toneladas de material acumulado en casa he encontrado suficientes miniaturas como para montar un ejército cartaginés para ADLG. Aquí podeis ver como ha comenzado el trabajo. Lo siento por la mala calidad de las fotografías

Searching among the tons of  material accumulated at home I've found enough miniatures to assemble a Carthaginian army of ADLG. Here you can see how the work has started. Sorry for the poor photographs.

Todas las miniaturas son Xyston, y los escudos pintados a mano.

All the miniatures are Xyston, and the shields are hand painted.

This book from Osprey Publishing is centered in the campaign that opened the way to the battles of Pylos and Sphacteria, during the Peloponnesian war. Based mainly in “The History of the Peloponnesian War” by Thucydices, and a thorough inspection in the site, it explains the facts that finished with this Spartan defeat. ADLG Medieval / Medieval ADLG

Hace unos días jugué una partida de ADLG durante las jornadas medievales del Club Rubicon de L'Hospitalet. Como la temática era medieval y quería probar caballeros impetuosos, me decidí por un ejército normando en Sicilia. Una oportunidad perfecta para quitarle el polvo a mis viejos normandos. Mi contrincante, Carlos, trajo su ejército cruzado. No solo es un ejército potente, sino que muy bien pintado.

Some days ago I played an ADLG game in the Medieval Games held in the Club Rubicon from L'Hospitalet. As it was a medieval-themed game and I wanted to test impetuous knights, I decided to use a Norman in Sicily army. A perfect oppontunity to dust-off my old normans. My opponent, Carlos, brought his crusader army. It's not just a strong army, but also very well painted.

 

 

El campo de batalla estaba bastante abierto, con campos en un lado y una gran llanura en medio. Un lugar perfecto para que luchara la caballería. Ambos decidimos amasar la infantería en un flanco de la línea de la batalla, ocupando los caballeros el resto.

The battlefield was quite open, with fields on one side and a big plain in the middle. a perfect place for the cavalry to fight.Both of us decided to mass the infantry on one side of the battleline, with the cavalry on the centre and other flank.

 

 

La lucha fue directa, ya que ambos somos novatos en este juego. Los elementos cruzados de infantería mixta (ballesteros y lanceros) fueron imparables. Contuvieron a los lanceros pesados y arrasaron a los caballeros.

The fight was straightforward, as the both of us are rookies in this game. His elements of combined infantry (crosbowwmen plus spearmen) were unstoppable. They contained the heavy spearmen and massacred the knights.

 

En uno de los flancos hubo una larga melée de caballeros.
In one of the flanks there was a long knight melée.

Tras una larga serie de combates, y gracias a una serie de tiradas increíbles en el último turno, el resultado cambió de derrota a destrucción mútua. Ahora que ya sé que puede hacer los caballeros, ya estoy pensando en probar más tipos de tropas. Quizás elefantes...

After a long struggle, and thanks to an incredible series of good dice in the last turn, the result changed from defeat to mutual destruction. Now that I know what can the knights do, I'm already looking to test more these rules. Maybe elephants...

 

III Jornada Rubicon Medieval / III Medieval Rubicon meeting

Este fin de semana acudí a la III Jornada Rubicón Medieval, del club Rubicon de L'Hospitalet. En ella se celebraron diversas partidas, demostraciones de juegos, el escenario de Poitiers para DBMM y un torneo de DBA con temática medieval. Yo participé en un partida de Art de la Guerre, que relataré en otra entrada del Blog.

Last weekend I assisted to the III mediecal Rubicon meeting, of the Rubicon club in L'Hospitalet. Different games, demonstrations, the Poitiers scenario for DBMM and a medieval-themed DBA competition were held. I played an Art de la Guerre game, that I'll describe in another entry of this blog.

Magnesia 190 BC

Este domingo estuvimos recreando Magnesia con el reglamento Art de la Guerre (ADLG) en el Club RECS de Gavà. Para dar un poco de volumen a la batalla doblamos el tamaño de las bases, doblando a su vez el movimiento y alcance.

Ha sido nuestro primer escenario con este reglamento y nos ha gustado la velocidad de resolución del mismo.

This Sunday we were recreating Magnesia with the Art de La Guerre ruleset (ADLG) in the RECS Club in Gavà. To increase the volume of the battle we doubles the size of the bases and also the movement and shooting ranges. It's been our first scenario with this ruleset and we've liked the solving speed of the game.

 

El resultado fué histórico, con los romanos arrasando a los Seleúcidas en toda la línea.
The outcome was historical, with the romans devastating the Saleucids in all the line.

Agincourt

 

Hace pocos días finalicé la lectura de Agincourt, de Juliet Barker (http://www.julietbarker.co.uk/). La verdad es que quería documentarme sobre la guerra de los 100 años, y como las críticas de este libro han sido buenas me decidí a leerlo.

Mi idea original era profundizar sobre los movimientos estratégicos antes y después de la batalla, pero me llevé una agradable sorpresa. El libro no solo incluía estos temas, sino también una explicación de la situación política heredada de finales del siglo XIV, la educación de Enrique V, la forma en que se financió la campaña, su logística… por no hablar de las relaciones entre nobles franceses y la situación de guerra civil entre los Borgoñones y los Armagnac. ¿Y qué otro libro sobre historia militar te dedica unas páginas a las diferencias entre médicos y cirujanos y sus primeros colegios?

Creo que es un libro de lo más recomendable, y ya estoy esperando a su segunda parte (Conquest).

A few days ago I finished reading Agincourt, from Juliet Barker (http://www.julietbarker.co.uk/). In fact I wanted to read something about the 100 years war, and as the comments on this book were quite good I decided to read it.

My original idea war to learn more on the strategical movements before and after the battle, but I’ve had quite a nice surprise.The book not only included this topics, but also an explanation of the political situation from the end of the XIVth Century, the raising of Henry V, how he financed this campaign, the logistics…even the relations between the different French nobles and the civil war situation between the Burgundians and the Armagnac. And which military history book  devotes some pages to the difference between medics and surgeons and their first colleges?

I think that this is a most recommendable  book, and I’m already waiting to read the second part (Conquest).

Construyendo vallas / making fences

Hace un tiempo un amigo me enseñó esta página web (http://napoleonicscenarios.weebly.com/terrain-tips.html) en la que se describía la fabricación de varios tipos de fortificaciones. Me quedé entusiasmado por la idea, así que me he dedicado a practicar con estos terrenos. En esta entrada quiero describir el proceso de fabricación de unas vallas de madera para 15 mm. Servirán para escenarios en Europa o américa en los s XIX y XX.

Some time ago a friend of mine showed this webpage (http://napoleonicscenarios.weebly.com/terrain-tips.html) in which some fortification tips were described. I was enthusiastic with the idea, so that I've started to practise with these terrains. In this entry I want to describe the manufacturing process of wooden fences in 15 mm. They'll be useful in scenarios in Europe or America in the XIXth and XXth centuries.

 

Primero, me dedico a cortar finas tiras de madera de unos 10x1 cm (he usado palos de polos) y tiras de caucho imantado para poder transportarlas.

First I've cut strips from wooden sticks (I've used ice cream sticks) and strips from plastic magnet to carry them.

 

Entonces he lijado los cortes.

Then I've sand the cuts.

Después he cortado bastoncillos para hacer los travesaños y los postes.

Then I've cut small sticks to make the crossbars and the posts.

 

He pegado las tiras de imán a la tira de madera.

I've glued the iman strips to the wooden strip.

 

He preparado al valla, encolando los bastoncillos cortados así:
I've prepared the fence by glueing the sticks like this:

Cuando se han secado, he montado la valla sobre la tira de madera.

When it's dry I've assembled the fence on the wooden strip.

Una vez secado el pegamento, he imprimado las vallas en negro.

Once the glue is completely dry, I've primed the  fences in black.

Entonces pinto la valla en marrón chocolate.

Then I paint the fence in chocolate brown.

He realizado la primera iluminación con un marrón claro.

I've made the first highlight with a clear brown colour.

Y la segunda iluminación con gris piedra.

Ant the second highlight with stone grey.

Para hacer el baseado primero he pegado algo de césped de varios colores.

To make the basing first I've glued some multi-colored grass.

 

Y después le he pegado algo de gravilla de color claro.

And later I've glued some clear colour gravel.

Este es el resultado final, con la iluminación adecuada y unas miniaturas de Essex baseadas igual.

This is the final result, with correct illumination and some Essex miniatures equally based.
